To accurately determine whether a driver is gripping a steering operation device.SOLUTION: A gripping determination system 3 includes: a contact sensor 35 which generates varying electrostatic capacities depending on the contact position of a driver to a steering operation device 22; a steering torque sensor 32 which outputs an output value corresponding to a steering torque; and a controller 15 which determines whether or not the driver is gripping the steering operation device 22, based on the electrostatic capacity of the contact sensor 35 and the output value of the steering torque sensor 32. The controller 15 estimates the contact position of the driver to the steering operation device 22, based on the electrostatic capacity of the contact sensor 35, establishes a threshold value corresponding to the contact position of the driver and determines that the driver is gripping the steering operation device 22 when the output value of the steering torque sensor 32 is equal to or in excess of the threshold value.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 5
