To provide a structural material for an automobile which can prevent chipping and electrolytic corrosion without using a protection tape, dispenses with unevenness adjustment for coating, and can be manufactured in a short time, and a method for manufacturing the same.SOLUTION: A structural material for an automobile containing a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic has a base layer 3 composed of a cured product of a sheet molding compound 1 containing a short length carbon fiber and a thermosetting resin, and a protective layer 4 which is laminated on the base layer 3 and is composed of a cured product of a glass paper prepreg 2 or a glass cloth prepreg containing a glass fiber and a thermosetting resin, and the base layer 3 and the protective layer 4 are integrally cured.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
