Disclosed are a charger for charging the high voltage battery of a vehicle and a method for controlling the same. The method according to the embodiment of the present invention includes (a) a step of detecting the frequency of AC power connected to a charger; (b) a step of derating the PFC output control voltage of the charger if the frequency of the AC power is less than the allowable critical frequency of the charger; and (c) a step of performing the charging of the high voltage battery through the charger.
