An electric vehicle includes a battery, a motor driving device configured to drive a motor through an inverter based on a voltage of the battery, and a battery controller configured to determine whether to perform an output limitation on the battery based on whether a regenerative braking ratio varying according to a charge amount and a discharge amount of the battery within a preset time period is less than or equal to a preset ratio, and adjust a derate ratio with respect to an output limitation value of the battery when the output limitation is performed.
