An autonomous vehicle (AV) and a mobile computing device can perform a rider to vehicle handshake utilizing flash codes received from a backend transport facilitation system. Upon approaching a pick-up location, the AV can output a flash sequence, which can be detected by the mobile computing device to identify the AV to the rider. The mobile computing device may then output a return flash sequence, which can be detected and authenticated by the AV to establish a secure wireless connection with the mobile computing device.
