Provided is a rubber composition for a heavy duty tire that can provide wear resistance and fuel economy performance improved to a level higher than that in the related art, and can provide satisfactory workability and tensile strength in a well-balanced and compatible manner. The rubber composition contains silica in amount of 40 parts by mass or more per 100 parts by mass of a diene rubber, the diene rubber containing an isoprene rubber in an amount from 60 mass % to 85 mass % and a modified styrene-butadiene rubber having a glass transition temperature of lower than −50° C. in an amount from 15 mass % to 40 mass %, and contains a silane coupling agent in an amount from 1 mass % to 20 mass % with respect to a blended amount of the silica.
