In a safety brake device for a conveying device, such as an elevator cabin and/or a counterweight, a brake shoe is applied at a rail parallel to the conveying route when the safety brake device is triggered. An engagement lever on the rail side opposite the brake shoe is pivotable between release and brake positions. In the brake position, the rail is clamped between lever and shoe. A trigger element deflects the engagement lever to the brake position. To that end, the trigger element is displaceable from a release position to a brake position. A roller is displaceable from a release position remote from the rail to a first brake position in contact with the rail and then further, parallel to the rail, to a second brake position, in which the contact element acts upon the trigger element. An electrically triggerable actuation arrangement controls the displacement of the roller.
