The development of appropriate training schemes and scenarios for computer-based training in the use of new Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), has been one of the many objectives of the TRAIN-ALL (European Commission-EC co-funded) project. In order to make drivers familiar and able to use the in-vehicle driver support systems, specific simulator scenarios have been built, along with the use of criteria for their safe use, so that the trainees, at the end of their curriculum, can learn how to optimally use ADAS without overestimating their functionality and knowing their limitations. Simulation of systems for both the longitudinal and lateral axes of the road is supported. The paper presents the rationale and simulated functionality and limitations of ADAS simulation, followed by evaluation results with novice drivers and driving instructors that were realized in the Hellenic Institute of Transport.
