Beyond 5G technology is crucial for the future communication infrastructure supporting Society 5.0, a concept from the Japanese Cabinet aimed at balancing economic growth and societal problem-solving through technology promotion. Free-space laser communication will become critical for B5G’s data-transmission demands. NICT is on track to finalize fully operational prototypes of compact laser-communication terminals by 2023. These versatile terminals are designed to meet a variety of needs and enhance communication performance compared to existing solutions available in the market. This article presents an overview of their capabilities and validation plans. It also highlights forthcoming demonstrations, with a focus on High-Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS) and small satellites.
