Transportation systems, including subway and railway systems, can be effectively modeled and analyzed using complex network theory, which offers a framework for examining their structural and dynamics. In this paper, we represent subway and railway systems as complex network systems, where stations serve as nodes and physical connections between them act as edges. Utilizing exact controllability theory, we investigate the controllability and robustness of the transportation network systems. Simulations conducted on both real and model transportation network systems reveal that targeted attacks compromise network controllability more rapidly and severely than random failures. Moreover, edge weights have a negligible effect on the controllability and robustness of sparse transportation network systems. Furthermore, denser and more homogeneous transportation network systems exhibit superior controllability and greater robustness compared to their sparser or more heterogeneous counterparts. These findings provide a theoretical foundation for enhancing the robustness and optimization of real transportation network systems.
