In this paper a synchronous motor propulsion system suitable for transit application is described and discussed. A two-quadrant chopper along with a self-commuting inverter provides propulsion and rengenerative braking. The control scheme makes the system operate stably at all speeds and avoids loss of synchronisation. The control scheme can provide thrust control, torque angle control and power factor control. A prototype model using a 5 hp synchronous motor is built and tested.
