The electric drivetrain consists of the battery, power converter and electric motor providing mechanical output for traction. Certain torque-speed operating points can be mapped to potential high-efficiency regions in the drive cycle to enhance efficiency of PMSM drives. These operating points can be optimized for maximum efficiency in the entire drive cycle using suitable control techniques. These control techniques achieve their control objective by optimally selecting system control variables to enhance system efficiency of PMSM (Permanent magnet synchronous motor) drives. This paper gives an overview of recent methods to enhance efficiency of the drivetrain in literature and their suitability considering various factors. This paper presents a critical and constructive analysis of the existing published literature of efficiency improvement strategies of PMSM drives for electric vehicles.
