We report on the first fabrication of fiber Bragg gratings using UV femtosecond radiation. The Bragg gratings with a photoinduced refractive index modulation of up to 2/spl times/10/sup -3/ were recorded in standard H/sub 2/-loaded SMF-28 and four different H/sub 2/-free photosensitive fibers by high-intensity (31-86 GW/cm/sup 2/) femtosecond pulses at 264 nm.
