We present a review of new ytterbium doped crystals (Yb:GdCOB, Yb:BOYS and Yb:SYS) used to develop sub-100-fs diode-pumped oscillators at around 1 /spl mu/m and a regenerative amplifier producing 380-fs, up to 100-/spl mu/j at 350-Hz.
