We present a comparison of the erbium optical properties of doped Al-silica and tellurite fibers. Absorption-emission spectra show a higher and flatter signal gain over shorter lengths in TeO/sub 2/ and lower losses of Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-SiO/sub 2/ fibers.
