We report an amplifierless microwave optical link with a measured noise figure of 4.2 dB at 150 MHz, and discuss techniques which, according to our analysis, will reduce its noise figure to below 3 dB. A general block diagram is shown for a short- or medium-haul optical intensity-modulation/direct-detection link operating at microwave frequencies.
