LiNbO/sub 3/ is a well-known and widely used crystal for its excellent electrooptic, acousto-optic, and non-linear optical properties. The incorporation of rare earth ions in this medium permits the construction of many interesting systems including self-Q-switched, self-mode-locked, and self-frequency-doubled laser devices. The combination of low-loss complex integrated optical functions with the new properties of rare-earth doped LiNbO/sub 3/ makes possible new, efficient and monolithic multifunction compact devices.
