In this paper, the role of the material dispersion, in particular the group velocity dispersion (GVD) is addressed. The propagation of high intense laser pulses in transparent media has been investigated both from the experimental and theoretical sides. The effect of the sign of GVD is studied on the self-guiding process. We derived analytical criteria predicting the self-channeling behavior and detail numerically the spatio-temporal dynamics of these pulses.
