The current trends in automotive development show that the use of wireless technology becomes more and more relevant. In battery development, this wireless technology can be applied to realize data exchange within the Battery Management System (BMS). As the BMS is a functional safety relevant system, there is a need to examine the functional safety compliance of the wireless technology as well. This paper intends to present the process and concept of achieving ASIL D compliance in a safety relevant data transfer using a wireless channel between two or more safety compliant elements in a BMS. The safety case and concept for the wireless BMS (wBMS) communication channel has been developed in a collaboration project between Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) and AVL, within the scope of ADI's existing system design and product for automotive use. This safety concept has also been assessed by an independent 3rd party organization and found adequate against the relevant requirements from ISO26262 functional safety standard.
