This letter reports two types of mode-locked ring lasers using MQW-semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). One type is a direct modulation of MQW-SOAs, and the other is an external modulation using a LiNbO/sub 3/ Mach-Zehnder optical modulator.<>
