Unsuitable driving strategies are the major contributor to the high energy usage of passenger vehicles in urban areas. This study provides an eco-driving strategy over road segments with multiple traffic signals to improve the fuel efficiency of the vehicle. The impacts of traffic flow on vehicle speed are also taken into account to further optimize the vehicle’s fuel consumption under various traffic conditions. Simulation results show that the proposed strategy can reduce the vehicle’s energy consumption by 47.02% and 11.62% in comparison to a human-driving and a heuristic rule-based eco-driving strategy.
