We present a theory for ultrashort pulse generation in cw solid-state lasers with a nonlinear Fabry-Perot resonator containing semiconductor layer that possesses of nonlinear refraction. Assuming the Fabry-Perot resonator to be much shorter than the pulse width and that the semiconductor absorber is fully saturated by the pulse energy, which is the case in real-world lasers, we derive the expressions for the Fabry-Perot resonator transmission in two limiting cases.
