Multi-level inverter finds its application in high-power energy applications because of its high efficiency. Multi-level inverters (MLIs) include several switches, hence there is a greater likelihood of errors occurring across those switches. Defects must thus be located and discovered as soon as feasible. For Pack-U-Cell (PUC) MLI in this context, a lookup-table-based fault detection and localization approach is provided. The method compares the observed output voltage, current, and capacitor voltage with the reference waveforms to identify both single and multiple short-circuit (SC) faults. The scheme detects and localizes the faults within one fundamental duty cycle. The modulation scheme used is Phase Disposition pulse width modulation (PD-PWM) scheme.
