We propose a bandwidth-efficient PON along with deflection and mini-slot transmission schemes to achieve efficient local networking. It is shown through simulation that bandwidth gain of 80% is easily achievable by employing a tunable transceiver of 125¿s (deflection) and 375¿s (mini-slot) switching times. Mini-slot scheme outperforms deflection scheme while the latter seems simpler.
