This paper explores the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) for Vegetation Encroachment Detection using multi-head attention based Transformers (VE-DETR) network. With the enormous rise in the use of powerlines in complex terrains, vegetation encroachment of overhead powerlines has become an important issue that causes severe powerline failures. Some of the possibilities include falling of trees on or growing into the transmission lines that causes power outages or starting a fire in surrounding areas is a significant concern. This causes a significant threat to the security and stability of the power grids. Thus, it is significant to detect vegetation encroachment for ensuring the security and reliability in operating the power systems. As regular overhead inspections of powerlines are expensive and require a systematic inspection to overcome power outages. UAVs combined with deep learning methods are a viable option for addressing the vegetation encroachment problem that poses a significant risk of powerline failures.
