We present a novel erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) with electronic gain and output power control, which only uses the total optical power measured at different points of EDFA as the control parameter. With this simple control mechanism, this EDFA is capable of very fast surviving channel gain control caused by 15 dB add/drop power excursions, and still be able to maintain lowest NF and gain flatness over an extremely wide dynamic range of input powers and EDFA gain variations. Also, the amplifier presented here is aimed for use outside of the laboratory environment and therefore is designed to maintain the same performance over a temperature range of 0 to 65/spl deg/C.
