Summary form only given. In our scheme, singly ionized lithium ions produced by a ns-KrF laser pulse are further ionized to a fully stripped state by a sub-ps KrF laser pulse (0.5 ps, 50 mJ) at 10/sup 17/ W/cm/sup 2/. We obtained extremely cold electron temperature of less than 1 eV. However, the ATI mode predicted much higher average electron energy of 26 eV than that measured experimentally.
