Wireless power transmission has the potential to significantly enhance the range and operational duration of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). However, the electrical conductivity of seawater poses additional challenges to transmitting wireless power when submerged. Compared to air, seawater has a higher electrical conductivity that leads to increased power transmission losses. These losses are particularly evident in the form of eddy current loss occuring between antennas in wireless power transmission systems. This paper examines electrical conductivity-related losses for AUV wireless power transmission systems, analyzing and modeling eddy current losses through experiments and computer simulations.
