For two-dimensional photonic crystals involving linear waveguides on a hexagonal lattice with air holes, a Y splitter structure with high performance and 60o waveguide bends is obtained by optimizing the waveguide length involving the radii of air-holes as the degrees of freedom. In particular, the proposed 60° bends significantly outperform previous designs that have comparatively larger footprints. The time domain and frequency domain analysis are done with the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) and Plane Wave Expansion (PWE) methods.
