This paper proposes an average input controlled single-switch buck power converter for use in hybrid electric vehicles. The power converter is designed to regulate constant input power from the auxiliary power unit (APU) regardless of load transients. This allows the APU to operate within a narrow torque and speed range for minimum emissions and optimum system efficiency. The impact on future APU designs is that they can be designed to sustain much lower peak torque. This will significantly reduce the weight and cost of the generator and engine for the future APUs.
