In summary, the results presented herein show a significant BER increase of M-QAM in a hybrid AM/QAM optical fiber system due to the clipping distortion. The effect is significant even with a small probability of clipping as shown by the experimental results. Consequently, to reduce this kind of effect powerful error correction coding techniques for M-QAM may have to be applied.<>
