In this article a formal and model-based description of system functions is derived, which is targeted to be directly executable on future plug&fly avionics systems. All technical, safety-related, and process-related aircraft system requirements are reviewed that must be expressible by such a description. The requirements are condensed in standardized and generic system function building facets. Facets are translated into a model-based description, a so called meta-model, which can be used to describe arbitrary system functions for self-organizing avionics and is suitable for a concurrent process.
