We have fabricated and evaluated fibre grating lasers (FGLs) consisting of a strained layer (SL) MQW semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and a distributed fibre Bragg grating reflector, for use in WDM transmitters. By using 600 /spl mu/m long SL MQW SOAs in conjunction with a precisely positioned fiber Bragg grating, high fiber output power and bit rates up to 2.5 Gbit/s can be realized. As the lasers exhibit low noise, we also expect to use them in optical cable television systems.
