This paper presents the performance evaluation of a dual stator dual rotor interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (DSDR-IPMSynM) for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The motor is equipped with two stators and two interior permanent magnet rotors. The rotor of outer motor is connected to the rear axle, while the rotor of the inner motor is coupled to the internal combustion engine (ICE) through a belt-driven system. The 2-D Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is used in this paper to analyse the electromagnetic performance of the DSDR-IPMSynM. The FEA results evidence that both outer and inner motors exhibit satisfactory electromagnetic performance. A single, robust and efficient electric motor is used in place of two separate electric motors, thus reducing the size and also mitigating the complicated mechanical connection of the traction systems that requires a gearbox to couple two separate electric motors with the ICE. This advantage positions the DSDR-IPMSynM as a strong candidate in HEVs traction applications.
