Recently fiber gratings have been applied to numerous applications in lightwave technology. We demonstrate a coherent optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) using a fiber grating external cavity laser and coherent heterodyne detection. The fiber grating external cavity laser, which serves as the source, is very robust, compact, and free of alignment problems. The laser has a long static coherence length (6 km in optical fiber) which is a major advantage.
