With an increasing demand for high-resolution radar and wideband communication systems, the frequency spectrum is becoming a limited resource. Many such systems must coexist in a given frequency band. In order to minimize interference among these systems, a radar waveform design is used. Without a priori knowledge of the transmission channel and communication waveform, one viable strategy is to use spectral nulls for the frequencies used by communication system. This article describes an improved method for generating pseudonoise waveforms with limited range and Doppler sidelobes. The algorithm permits adjustable power spectral density of the generated waveform. An additional parameter, “significance factor,” is a tradeoff between power spectral density shape and sidelobe suppression depth. The method also allows the generation of a set of mutually orthogonal waveforms for multitransmitter scenarios. Effectiveness of the algorithm is confirmed by both numerical simulation and field trials.
