This paper proposes a voltage sensor-less control scheme for an AC-DC front-end converter with power factor correction. One application of the proposed control scheme is that it can be used for level-1 (single phase) battery charging of EV by utilizing the already present driving hardware in the vehicle such as the inverter which can act as the power factor correction converter. Other applications for the proposed control scheme are LED drivers, UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), etc. The main contribution of the paper is a voltage sensor-less charging algorithm which is capable of maintaining unity power factor grid current without sensing the grid voltage. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm does not require phase-locked loop for grid synchronization. The proposed control algorithm is verified with simulation and its implementation in hardware is done for EV battery charging application. Simulation and experimental results obtained are presented in this paper.
