Summary form only given. We have demonstrated efficient wavelength conversion using difference frequency mixing within the 1.5-/spl mu/m communications band in periodically-poled lithium niobate waveguides containing an integrated waveguide taper and directional coupler. Static wavelength conversion loss of 7 dB, a large signal dynamic range, and conversion bandwidth >54 nm have been observed. By improving the device fabrication process (such as waveguide uniformity), 0 dB wavelength conversion loss should be possible using a diode laser pump.
