The propulsion motor is an important component of the ship's electric propulsion system, usually characterized by low-speed high torque, high specific power, high efficiency and energy saving, low vibration and noise, and high reliability. Currently, permanent magnet synchronous motors(PMSM) have an absolute advantage in the market of ship's electric propulsion industry, but the vast majority of applications are still in the traditional star connection method. There is no relevant literature on the application of open winding PMSMs in unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV). The open winding PMSM is applied to the electric propulsion system of an UUV. The rating parameters and structure of the propulsion motor was presented and the vector control topology structure, zero sequence current suppression and filtering method of the open winding motor were focused for its vector model. Then this article focused on selecting the medium-hexagonal vector working mode and comparing external characteristics of the motor with the traditional star connection working mode. Combined with the actual electric propulsion data of UUV, the technical advantages of the medium-hexagonal vector working mode over the traditional star connection in UUV electric propulsion are verified.
