Properties of guided modes in active cylindrical waveguides are of considerable interest for many applications, most recently vertical-cavity surface-emitting semiconductor lasers (VCSELs). In this paper, we investigate transverse modes in active step-index cylindrical waveguides by solving the wave equation exactly, and determine the limits of applicability of the approximate solutions. In order to facilitate identification of various transverse modes, the eigenvalue equation for step-index cylindrical waveguides is transformed into separate equations for TE, TM, EH, and HE modes, without invoking any approximation.<>
