Within a microgrid, the inverters of energy-generation and storage systems are required to comply with a specific local grid code. Additionally, they need to have the ability for off-grid operation in combination with other generation systems as well as for changing the operation mode and synchronizing the island grid while running. This article describes implemented concepts for the grid-side inverter control of an established electric drive system. Its microgrid functionality is demonstrated by a shaft-generator application used in ships.
