This paper presents a scheme for extension of speed range with harmonic compensation in the over-modulation region for dual inverter fed five-phase open-end stator winding induction motor drives. Out of the two inverters connected to the drive, the DC source fed inverter is used for supplying active power alone, while the second inverter, with a capacitor at its DC link, provides the reactive power required for the drive. In addition, the capacitor fed inverter compensates the harmonics generated by the DC source fed inverter while it is operating in the over-modulation region culminating in 10-step operation. This control technique enhances the speed range over which the drive can operate at its rated torque. The highest performance in terms of torque/power is achieved when the DC source fed inverter operates in ten-step mode yielding maximum fundamental voltage. The proposed scheme is validated by simulation using Matlab-Simulink software and experimentally verified using a laboratory prototype.
