By operating a tapered optical amplifier in a ring, a stand-alone source is obtained which retains the excellent properties of the output of a tapered amplifier. Further, narrow linewidth and the ability to tune the fibre ring laser open up a wide range of applications. A ring laser employing a tapered amplifier and polarization tuning of a low-power fiber-ring laser containing a semiconductor optical amplifier have been demonstrated.
