This paper reports the first demonstration of single-mode operation of a Raman fiber laser (RFL) that uses a multi-mode fiber as the Raman gain medium. The single-mode operation is achieved by exploiting the beam cleanup properties of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in multi-mode fibers, and provides a simpler and more efficient means of developing Raman fiber lasers.
