Electrified ships have been facing a paradigm shift in the onboard power system, where are shipboard microgrids, with some moving to full electrification while others take a hybrid approach. The hybrid approach provides higher reliability that is required for ships when they spend long stretches at sea. The traditional prime movers are diesel generators and gas turbines where both use the same fuel. Typically, the cost of these units has been considered using quadratic cost functions, which miss fuel savings opportunities. Therefore, the fuel efficiency equations provide opportunity to increase efficiency and save fuel. The predicted load onboard the ship was distributed across the generators and the batteries onboard based on the generators' fuel efficiency with a margin for changes in load that may occur to increase resiliency. Additionally, the batteries onboard were implementing using the cycle life.
