The fundamentals of an improved transport ecosystem in India should be one that is reliable, affordable, available, convenient, and, safe. Mobility demand in India is bound to increase over the next few years, with its 1.3 billion population, providing a market base that is one of the world’s single largest markets. The idea of urban design has also seen a paradigm shift, with Smart Cities, and integrated services ranging from mobility to education to recreation and employment opportunities. These would require investment in the digital domain, with connectivity being at the core. The future of mobility will not only be connected vehicles, with new-age in-vehicle features, but also enable connectivity of multi-modal transport and between other city services. The Government and the private sector need to collaborate towards shaping the future of Indian mobility, with a focus on understanding true costs of technology, build consumer and business confidence in the mobility transition, and, look at a portfolio of options in the mobility space. The creation of such an ecosystem will allow consumer choices to drive the mobility paradigm and appropriate focus on technology shifts – a demand pull approach rather than a push. The growth of the transportation sector should balance the objectives of creating additional employment, access to affordable technology and finance, and most importantly, improve the competitiveness of domestic manufacturing. The potential for electric mobility in India is significant with growing mobility demand, innovation in business models and falling technology costs. India is expected to see 60 million passenger-vehicle sales by 2025, almost double of what it is today. Even if India saw 1-2 per cent of this transition to EVs, it would amount to around a million EVs.
