The technical progress in repeaterless transmission over the last two decades is reviewed. Possible technologies for expanding capacity and increasing distance are discussed i.e., soft-decision FEC, electronic equalizers, DPSK, bidirectional transmission, and low-loss large A/sub eff/ fibers.
