In step-index optical fibers where both core and cladding are chiral media, the guided modes tray be semi-leaky waves. If the chirality parameter is greater than a critical value, a surface wave may be transformed into a semi-leaky wave that continuously radiates energy into the cladding. Hence, for the longitudinal wave number, complex values must be considered when solving the modal equation, i.e., for the discrete spectrum of guided modes in chiral optical fibers semi-leaky waves must be taken into account.
