In this paper, we aim at two conflicting goals, privacy and Sybil ýattacks in Vehicular Ad Hoc NETworks (VANETs). Sybil attack ýrefers to impersonation of one physical entity for many, namely ýSybil nodes. Such attacks may cause dire consequences such as ýtraffic jams or even deadly accidents. We leverage pseudonymless ýbeaconing in order to ýpreserve privacy. To cope with the Sybil ýattack, we put forth a twofold strategy. For scheduled beacons, ýwe ýemploy TRM (Tamper Resistant Module) to perform a ýlightweight pre-assembly data analysis on beacons whereas ýfor ýERMs (Event Reporting Messages), RSUs distribute ýauthorized tokens among benign vehicular ýnodes which in turn ýare consumed to report ERM. Our proposed scheme preserves ýprivacy ýin both beacons and ERMs, and offers conditional ýanonymity.ý
