High-Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) is a new mobile communications platform that enables ultrawide coverage and disaster-resilient networks. The HAPS communication system consists of service links that establish communications between HAPS and cellular phones and a feeder link that establishes communication between HAPS and a base station (gateway). The feeder link transceiver on HAPS is expected to use for inter-HAPS communication and aircraft backhauls as well as the link to the gateway. HAPS flies in a constant range over the airspace to maintain the service area, so it is constantly moving and changing its attitude. To maintain the link to the gateway, it is necessary for the feeder link transceiver to control the beam direction. In this study, we describe the prototype development of a millimeter-wave band feeder link transceiver that controls the beam direction by considering the position of the target and the attitude change of the HAPS. Furthermore, we discuss the transceiver’s performance in indoor and outdoor experiments.
